The publication is free and available by visiting www.nycampgrounds.com and filling out the online request form or calling toll-free at (800) 497-2669.

The 100-page directory highlights the features and amenities for more than 200 privately-owned and operated campgrounds and RV parks across New York State, and is designed as a planning tool for RVers. It's available in print format as well digitally.

"Whether you are tenting, staying in a cabin, or traveling in an RV, the healthful benefits of getting outdoors is a great reason to go camping," says Donald Bennett, Jr., President and CEO of CONY. "We're living in much more sedentary and disconnected times, and camping is one of our last ways to stay truly and deeply in touch with our health, our family, our friends, and the world around us."

The directory includes website addresses and driving directions for all the campgrounds and RV parks, and advertisements for vacation destinations and RV service providers.

The camping season in New York kicks off in late April. Reservations are now being taken at many parks across the state.

Campground Owners of New York was founded in 1963. It's dedicated to the promotion, growth, improvement and development of privately owned campgrounds in New York State.

New Jersey park plan draws fire, concern

Like most other state park systems across the country, New Jersey has its own share of financial woes. Tiptoeing through the mine field of outside funding, state project developers are taking more than just a few pot-shots from folks concerned that Garden State Parks could become clones for commercial enterprise. In a story carried by philly.com (an e-version of the Philadelphia Inquirer) it would seem the lines are drawn and the guns may start blazing at any time.
A spokesman for the Sierra Club of New Jersey warns, "Next thing you know, you have to pay more for everything and the public's access is limited. You'll be getting fee'd to death." That's the opinion of Jeff Tittel, the group's director.

On the other side of the spectrum comes Lou Valente, the architect of the state's plan to generate more income through alliances with non-government entities. Valente started feeling the heat last October when the state rolled out its plans to rely less on government funds and more on outside income.

Valente told the paper, "We're planning substantial change by 2015." If plans go the way of his vision, over a third of the park monies would come from outside groups, raising funds from concessionaires and the leasing of some park properties like golf courses. Valente says the money is needed badly--parks take in $8 million a year, but the annual budget runs $40 million.

Critics envision chain restaurants operating on park grounds; huge gatherings where groups could rent out park venues for weddings--or worse. The state contends they have much more down-to-earth and park-friendly views. A non-profit group taking over life guard staffing and charging a fee for lessons and exercise classes. But others wonder what will happen if other operations are taken over by vendors. Sierra Club Tittel: They're not professionals and don't have the same level of caring for the parks," he said. "Who's screening them? Will valuables walk away? Then, there's the loss of access,"if you can make more money on a Saturday afternoon renting out a park area, then the public doesn't have access."

It's a contentious issue, and one like other states across the union are dealing with. Some states are simply closing parks, or turning them over to private entities for operations. Others are looking to fee programs that increasingly ding users as they come in the gate. California is increasingly looking to "friends" groups of non-profit organizations who either directly operate parks, or provide funding to pay for state employees to continue to do their jobs.

To read the complete Inquirer story, visit the site.

photo: Barnegat Lighthouse State Park, New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection

Pennsylvania campgrounds and RV resorts win most "A" ratings from ARVC

Buttonwood Campground

The National Association of RV Parks and Campgrounds' (ARVC) annual Outdoor Hospitality Conference and Expo wass held in Savannah, Georgia last month to award grades for their over 3,200 private RV parks and campgrounds across the country.

According to ARVC, the company's mission statement is "To promote the success and growth of RV parks, campgrounds and the Outdoor Hospitality industry."

ARVC claims to be "only national association exclusively representing the interests of all commercial RV Parks and Campgrounds in the United States. Membership includes RV parks and campgrounds, cabin and lodge resorts, membership campgrounds and resorts, industry suppliers, and park developers.

Membership provides group purchasing power, national public relations and promotional services, advocacy representation on state and national policy issues, and business management services including educational offerings, industry publications, and marketing and advertising opportunities.

But this is not a commercial for ARVC. What is interesting, though, is that of the 44 A" ratings in the fourth annual consumer satisfaction survey given to member campgrounds and resorts, ten of those "A" grades were in Pennsylvania--the most awarded state at the conference.

According to an article written by Shannon M. Nass for the Post-Gazette in Pittsburg, "more than 30,000 camping and RV enthusiasts participated in the online survey, which evaluated guest experiences at campgrounds, RV parks, and resorts that are affiliated with the National Association."

That would certainly take some steam out of Western states RVers' beliefs that the best camping in the country is west of the Rocky Mountains. In fact, since the result reflects that of users, it likely will stir some interest in some westerners to make a trip back east to check out these "A" campgrounds.

Here is the list of the Pennsylvania "A" winners, and a few others close by:

Named the Top 10 Pennsylvania campgrounds: Meadville KOA (formerly Brookdale Family Campground), Meadville (Crawford County); Dogwood Acres Campground, Newville (Cumberland); Gettysburg Campground, Gettysburg (Adams); Kalyumet Camping and Cabins, Lucinda (Clairon); Keen Lake Camping and Cottage Resort, Waymart (Wayne); Mountain Vista Campground, East Stroudsburg (Monroe); Pioneer Campground, Laporte (Sullivan); and Rose Point Park, New Castle (Lawrence).

Also on that list are Yogi Bear's Jellystone Camp Resort, Harrisville (Butler), which also was named Medium Size Park of the Year, and Buttonwood Campground, Mexico, PA (Juniata), also tapped as Large Park of the Year (photo).

Several winning campgrounds are in nearby states include Ashland Resort in Northfork, West Virginia; Cross Creek Camping Resort in Delaware, Ohio; and Cherry Hill Park in College Park, Maryland.

New mobile app guides visitors to New Jersey outdoor, historic sites

The New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection has launched a new mobile phone application to help visitors plan for and make the most out of their trips to New Jersey’s state parks, forests and historic sites. The free Pocket Ranger application provides information on activities, amenities and services directly to users’ smartphones, and is designed to make the park system more self-sustaining while improving visitor services.

The version of the application compatible with Apple iPhones was launched January 3. The Android-compatible version should follow within days. The applications can be downloaded at www.StateParkApps.com

With a few taps of the screen, visitors can use their smartphones to find overviews, directions, operating hours and activities available at various sites managed by the DEP’s Division of Parks and Forestry. Visitors can also fine-tune their searches by looking for activities that interest them, such as hiking, bicycling, swimming, fishing, boating, canoe rentals or winter activities.

Pocket Ranger can help visitors make lodging reservations, has social networking capabilities, and provides an advanced map-caching feature that allows users to continue to navigate even if mobile service is lost. In addition, advanced GPS technology allows hikers to keep track of where they are and how far they’ve hiked. The same technology enables hunters and anglers to mark favorite hunting spots and fishing holes.

The application also has a Friend Finder feature that allows users to keep track of the location of friends and family. As an added safety feature, Pocket Ranger has an alert feature that notifies select contacts of your GPS coordinates in the event of an emergency.

The DEP will receive a portion of advertising revenues generated by the application, which is not costing anything for the department to implement.

The state park system encompasses 440,000 acres in all 21 counties, and includes more than 50 historic sites, historic battlefields and villages, and 39 active recreation areas with year-round operations. The park system also includes more than 500 miles of hiking and riding trails and 10 miles of ocean beaches.

New Jersey is the ninth state to make the mobile tour guide application available to the public. The others are Pennsylvania, Delaware, Kentucky, Louisiana, North Carolina, Missouri, Rhode Island and South Dakota.

Pennsylvania gears up for 44th annual RV & Camping Show slated for September

The 44th annual Pennsylvania RV and Camping Show will be held Sept. 12-16 at the Hershey Entertainment and Resorts Co. Giant Center in Hershey, PA.

Sponsored by the Pennsylvania RV & Camping Association (PRVCA), there will be plenty of parking and good things to eat. There are numerous campgrounds in the region, some as little as two miles from the show and others as far as 56 miles away. Additionally, there are many hotels and motels in the region.

The Hershey show is the first in the nation to debut new products. It is set up differently from many other RV shows since it is laid out by manufacturers instead of dealers, making it the easiest way to shop and compare the many RV brands.

There will be more than 21 acres of RVs on display, allowing attendees to examine hundreds of RVs of every make and model. It is estimated that two days are required to see everything.

Accessory vendors are a major part of the show, providing RV and camping accessories and quality educational seminars from RV industry experts.

The show debuted in 1968 and has evolved to be the largest of its kind. The N.J. Campground Owners Association operates a web site that has become the most complete source of information regarding camping in New Jersey.

No matter what type of camping you choose, tenting, RVing or cabin rentals, New Jersey has something for you. There is even a campground in very urban Jersey City that is a hop, skip and a jump away from Manhattan.

One of the state's more popular areas is the Delaware River Region that includes the N.J. State Aquarium at Camden and Trenton, the nation's second-largest state capital in continuous use. It is the site of one of George Washington's greatest Revolutionary War victories.

The region is home to the Pine Barrens, a million acres of preserved forests and waterways. It is the largest wilderness area east of the Mississippi River.

Inside these forests you can camp, hike, fish or paddle a canoe. You can visit the historic town of Batsto, a preserved 19th-century bog-iron town where craftsmen still ply their trade.

There are many campgrounds and state parks in New Jersey, many of which rival the best of those in other areas of the United States.

For more information about camping and attractions write to the N.J. Campground Association at Box 808, Marmora, NJ 08223, or call (609) 545-0145 or toll free at 1-(800) 222-6765. According to a Yahoo report by Kateryn Elizabeth, maintained highways allow year-round access to campers who wish to take their RV or tent out for a winter weekend or even those who just grab a sleeping bag and gear to take advantage of a rustic camping cabin. The following is a list of parks that are open year-round.

Allegany State Park

Allegany State Park, located near Salamanca in the southwestern portion of New York, is a 65,000-acre recreational area frequented by Northeasterners who enjoy snowmobiling, cross country skiing and snowshoeing. Situated just 45 miles southeast of Lake Erie, it benefits from plenty of snow, thanks to being often in the path of extended lake effect snow. Year-round rustic camping cabins are available in the Quaker and Red House areas of the park, and a modern campground with hook-ups and camp store is available year-round near Red House Lake.

Cross-country ski trails are kept groomed throughout the season in the Art Roscoe Ski Touring area, and downhill ski enthusiasts can find slopes and snow tubing in less than a 30-minute drive north on Highway 219 in Holiday Valley, N.Y. The Seneca Allegany Casino is located in nearby Salamanca for warming up at or grabbing a bite. Each cabin village and campground section in the park offers clean restroom and shower facilities, with plenty of forced heat for those who choose to rough it while playing in the southwestern New York winter.

Wellesley Island State Park

For winter enthusiasts who want to rough it, but not in a tent during blustery upstate New York winter days, the rustic camping cabins at Wellesley Island State Park sit directly on the St. Lawrence Riverway between the U.S. and Canada, while looking across the Thousand Islands Region. These non-furnished camping cabins contain bunks, small kitchenettes and electricity with heat.

However, campers use normal camping utilities and facilities concerning water supply and centrally heated restrooms with showers, and they must bring their own necessities such as sleeping bags and kitchenware. Fire pits and grills are located outside of each cabin and ice fishing, winter hiking, cross-country skiing and snowshoeing are available within the park. The Minna Anthony Common Nature Center is a popular draw with a museum and ranger-led nature programs during all seasons. Watertown is about 15-minute drive south for any gear or supplies that campers may need to pick up.

Taconic State Park

For tent campers interested in an excellent late fall, early winter camping weekend within an easy drive from New York City, Taconic State Park offers rustic, wooded camping through mid-December each year at their Copake Falls camping area.

Platforms built approximately 1 1/2 feet off of the ground accommodate campers with tents in many of the treed sites helping to keep your tent area easily cleaned of any snow. There are no utilities at any of the sites, however, there are centrally located restroom and shower facilities with water stations, which are well kept and always warm. Campers can explore the old Copulate Iron Works and hike to Bash Bish Falls even in the early snows. Nearby skiing at Catamount in Massachusetts is less than 10 minutes away near the New York/Massachusetts border. The park staff is always helpful and knowledgeable. Fully furnished and utilized cottages with all the amenities are available for rent as well, if an unexpected storm brings a couple feet of snow — as happened in late October 2011.

SOURCE: Woodall's Campground Management, Yahoo Sports

Massachusetts RV show to celebrate 50 years

West Springfield, MASS -- On , The Springfield RV, Camping and Outdoor Show will celebrate it's 50th year February 17 through 20 with its annual show at the Eastern States Exposition grounds in West Springfield, Mass.

The show fills three buildings and is one of the largest in New England, drawing 35,000 attendees annually, according to the Pioneer Valley Chapter of the North American Family Campers Association, which runs the event.

The show features RV dealers, campground representatives, RV parts and accessories vendors, food vendors, seminars and more. Never approach a bear or other wild animal. Do not hike in the dark. Carry EPA-registered bear pepper spray Keep a clean camp site by properly disposing of food scraps and garbage. Do not leave food or garbage inside fire rings, grills or around your site. Never leave food or coolers unattended, even in developed picnic areas. If bear-proof containers are not available, store food and garbage inside a hard-top vehicle or trailer. Never store food inside a tent. Wipe tabletops clean before vacating a camp or picnic site. If a bear is observed nearby, pack up your food and trash immediately and vacate the area as soon as possible."

For more tips on bear safety go here. Dyer explained, however, that in order to fill the space at the Civic Center, at least three large vendors are needed. This year, only two had committed.

“It actually goes back to last year when dealers lost some of their co-op money [from RV manufacturers] to participate in the show,” Dyer said. “Last year, we cut the amount of rental space in half with the thought that something was better than nothing. This year, we were going to proceed that same way, but it didn’t happen.”

“Rather than attempting to deliver a sub par show, with fewer options for the show attendees, management has opted to take a year off,” Dyer said in a statement on Bass Park’s Web site. “It is our intention to come back in 2011 in an improved economy, stronger than ever.”

Pennsylvania RV and camping guide now available

The Pennsylvania RV and Camping Association (PRVCA) has released the 2010 edition of Explore Pennsylvania. It's the largest state park attendance in the past seven years, state officials say.

Several state parks saw a significant increase in the number of visitors, including Fort Point, where visits were up nearly 72 percent. Eight state campgrounds saw increases in nightly occupancy, with the greatest increases at Warren Island and Aroostook state parks.

Record Attendance for North Carolina State Parks

State parks in North Carolina reported record attendance in 2009 of 14.16 million visits, a jump of 13 percent over the previous year, and up 5 percent from the previous record set in 2007, according to the N.C. Division of Parks and Recreation.

Over the past 25 years, the state parks system has seen a dramatic 238 percent increase in visitation. In 1984, 5.9 million people visited state parks and state recreation areas.

“It’s obvious North Carolinians and visitors to our state recognize the tremendous value our state parks offer in terms of affordable family experiences and respite from a difficult economy,” said Gov. Jockey’s Ridge State Park in Dare County reported the highest attendance at 1.4 million visits, an increase of 2 percent over last year.

Other parks with significant increases were Cliffs of the Neuse State Park in Wayne County (42 percent), Crowders Mountain State Park in Gaston County (58 percent), Dismal Swamp State Park in Camden County (59 percent), Jordan Lake State Recreation Area in Chatham County (52 percent) and Mount Mitchell State Park in Yancey County (77 percent). The popular summit area at Mount Mitchell reopened in 2008 upon the completion of a new observation deck at the highest point in the eastern United States.

The study by North Carolina State University’s Department of Parks Recreation and Tourism Management determined that tourist visitors spend an average $23.56 a day to enjoy the state parks. A little good news came this week. According to the Virginia Department of Transportation a new, fourth lane on Interstate 95 northbound opened. The new lane starts at the U.S. 1 on-ramp near the Woodbridge exit, just beyond the bridge over the Occoquan River. That means Northbound drivers will now have four general traffic lanes on I-95 once they reach Woodbridge.

The new lane can handle an additional 1,500 vehicles an hour along I-95 north. That can save 5 to 10 minutes off the travel time for all drivers, according to VDOT.

This is the first completed section of the $123 million I-95 Fourth Lane Widening Project, a state- and federally-funded expansion of I-95 from three to four lanes from the Fairfax County Parkway to State Route 123.

When finished, I-95 will have four lanes in both directions from the Springfield Interchange to Woodbridge.

First Night Celebrations in New England

Remember the coming of the millennium 10 years ago? Well, the year is about to flip again from a “9” to a “10” ending. If it has been a decade since your last New Year’s blowout (or even if it’s been only a year), it is time to plan the next one. First Night celebrations, small and large, can be found all around New England. The big enchilada is First Night Boston, with tons of fun. The detour does not impact access to the Blue Ridge Parkway, nor travel to any destinations in North Carolina except directly from Tennessee.

For information on current road conditions, visitors should check the North Carolina Department of Transportation Traveler Information Management System website at www.ncdot.gov/traffictravel/ or call 511, the state’s free travel information line. Either way, there are a couple of places that took the basement train layout to an extreme here on the east coast.

Roadside America: Located in Shartlesville, PA along interstate 78, is an unforgettable panorama of life in rural United States. The exhibit spans more than two hundred years in time and lets you see, in exquisite miniature, how people lived and worked in pioneer days, through the years since then, right up to the present. The exhibit fascinates not only because of its authentic, beautifully crafted miniatures, but because of the excitement of continual movement. Swift trains glide through tunnels and over bridges, a tiny fountain bubbles in the miniature Zoo, a mountain trolley hustles through the woodland, an old-time grist mill slowly grinds grain for flour. This is only a small part of the action at Roadside America. The trains are “O” gauge.

There is plenty of parking for RV’ers and next store you can visit the Pennsylvania Dutch Gift House. Additionally, there is easy nearby access to the Appalachian Trail near some of the most scenic sections of the trail in Pennsylvania.

There are a number of campgrounds with-in a mile or two of Roadside America including Appalachian Camping Resort which is right across I-78 from the entrance.

Northlandz: Northlandz, bills itself as the world’s largest model railroad. Their trains are mostly “HO” gauge. They are located on US Rt. 202 in Flemington, NJ. They have over 8 miles of “HO” gauge track inside their building. Northlandz is a 16 acre world class attraction. Included in this complex is a doll museum, La Peep Doll House, a 2,000 pipe theater pipe organ and art galleries throughout. You can also check out a video of the display.

Nearby, in Flemington, is Liberty Village Premium Outlets. Most campgrounds are closed and driving can be tough, especially after a snowstorm. But there are avid campers, like me, who still want to get away for a weekend even in the dead of winter. For folks who love solitude, winter camping in the East Coast is great. You have campgrounds mostly to yourself and the prices can be lower.

There are a few things to keep in mind – most campgrounds shut off their water to sites after the first frost, and services will be limited, (don’t expect the camp store to carry many supplies.). Here are a few suggested places open in winter:

French Creek State Park: In Pennsylvania, only 30 minutes to Philadelphia. Sites are well maintained and easy to get into, even for larger rigs.

Otter Lake: In Marshalls Creek, PA in the Pocono mountains. This private campground is near skiing and has an indoor pool open on weekends. One caution, the road to the campground is winding – so not fun to tackle in snow.

Normandy Farms: Located near Boston, this is a top of the line four season RV resort with an indoor pool and plenty of winter activities.

Cherry Hill Park: Located in College Park, Maryland is just 30 minutes outside Washington DC. They provide transportation to DC during peak times but the park is also located with-in walking distance to mass transit.

There are other places. If you have a favorite place to camp in winter in the north east, let us know by adding a comment.

Image above: My children enjoying the indoor pool at Otter Lake.

Visit World’s largest Chocolate Moose

If you are heading north to Maine – make sure you detour to Len Libby Candies in Scarborough, Maine, just south of Portland. They sell handcrafted chocolate and ice cream, but the big draw is Lenny the life size Chocolate Moose (Mousse). Standing eight feet tall and over nine feet from nose to tail, Lenny the Moose is made out of 1700 pounds of chocolate. Unveiled in 1997 he was sculpted in just 4 weeks. There is a video on the Len Libby web site that tells the story of how Lenny the Moose was made along with trivia about Moose in general. They also have a number of Lenny the Moose items available for purchase.

Len Libby Candies first opened for business in 1926. In 1949, Len Libby sold his business to Fernand Hemond who had begun his apprenticeship in the Higgins Beach shop while still in college. From his earliest days with the company, Fern pledged to remain steadfast in his commitment to the shop's original recipes and to the proud traditions of candy-making.

When traveling up to Maine, it’s easy to find Len Libby. From I-95 (Maine Turnpike), take exit 42. Stay straight on Haigis Parkway and take a right onto Route 1 at the lights. Len Libby Candies will be immediately on your right. While there is no designated RV parking, I can tell you from experience that you should be able to find a place to park. Regular Business Hours are Monday - Saturday: 9am-5pm Sunday: 10am-5pm.

Image above: The Hemond Family in front of Lenny the Chocolate Moose.

Maryland State Park passes available for 2010

If you visit Maryland State Parks often, you can save money by purchasing the 2010 Maryland State Park Passport. In this eight minute video, tour some of these parks without leaving the comfort of your comfy computer chair, and learn more about why Virginia calls its sanctuaries "The Treasures of the Commonwealth."

Light up your holidays visiting Thomas Edison

When trying to convince potential patrons to fund work on the phonograph, the motion picture and other projects, Thomas Edison welcomed them into a high-ceiling, book-filled space with lamplight aglow on the wood of shelves and the railings of second- and third-story galleries. His visitors already respected him as the man behind practical electric lighting. Yet to people who had never been able to hear, on a whim, their favorite songs in the comfort of their own homes, this American wizard’s latest endeavors must have sounded like solid investments or at least intriguing possibilities.

Today, you can visit Edson's former haunts at Thomas Edison National Historical Park in West Orange, New Jersey. The elegant library still greets visitors, as does the rest of the newly renovated laboratory complex and the Edison family’s nearby estate.

SHORT OF ENTERING EDISON'S MIND for a peek at his inventions in the form of ideas, you can follow them through various stages of development. The drawings in the drafting room would have functioned like DNA, providing guidance as the raw materials in Edison’s stockroom were brought together into new pieces of technology. The heavy machine shop and the precision machine shop delivered the brainchildren of Thomas Alva, whose progeny also sprung forth from the chemistry lab – a world of ovens and tubes reminiscent of the Centre Pompidou or the workshop of a techno-crazed Santa Claus and his elfin geeks; the pattern shop, whence came wooden models of Edison’s devices; and a rebuilt version of the world’s first movie studio, the Black Maria.

Before or after visiting the birthplace of the cinema and recorded sound, tour the Victorian home that Edison shared with his second wife and his flesh-and-blood children, Madeleine, Theodore, and Charles. Beginning November 27, the halls of Glenmont will be decked with poinsettias, greens, bows, wreaths, and a 10-foot tree. Holidays at Glenmont tours will be offered on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays from noon until 4 p.m., November 27, 2009, through January 3, 2010. Additional holiday tours will be offered on Wednesday and Thursday, December 30 and 31.

Photo: Thomas Edison with is family at the back porch of Glenmont.

Stone Mountain Park Offers Camping Package

Located just 30 minutes north east of Atlanta, Stone Mountain Park is a great place to visit. The magic and spirit of the holidays come to life in the little town that chocolate built. Hershey, Pennsylvania is a magical place at Christmas. The whole town lights up and joins in the celebration. Your first stop should be Hersheypark Christmas Candylane. They have a million twinkling lights, rides for all ages, and great festive decorations that anyone would love! Candylane is open almost every day through New Year’s – but it’s best to check their web site for specific times and events. There is plenty of parking for even the largest Motorhome.

Also, don’t forget to take a drive through downtown Hershey where the lampposts are literally shaped like Hershey Kisses. While driving, you can also enjoy the holiday lights drive-thru called Hershey Sweet Lights. They have nearly 600 illuminated and animated displays you view from the comfort of your car as you drive through two miles of fields and wooded trails. All tours are led by state park naturalists.
Prices range from $20 to $55 a person and last about 3 hours.

Details for the tours are:
· January 15-16; January 22-23; February 5-6 at Dale Hollow State Resort Park
· January 15-17 at Kentucky Dam Village State Resort Park
· January 29-31 at Lake Barkley State Resort Park
· February 5-7 at Kenlake State Resort Park
Contact the parks directly for registration and details.

Lay-offs By State of PA. If you've always wanted to see the parade in person instead of on TV, a little planning should make your life easy. First, note that this year’s route has been changed. Instead of marching down Broadway the parade will head down 7th Avenue. According to the official parade web site, plan to get there early for the best viewing spots and note that the city will not allow the use of folding chairs.

Keep in mind New York City is not a place to try and drive a Motor Home. Use Park and Ride lots outside the city to park your camper and drive in with your car. Also, in New Jersey, Liberty Harbor RV Park is open all year. The Park has views of the Manhattan skyline and the Statue of Liberty. It provides easy access to the ferry’s to New York and is only 5 blocks from the PATH subway line into lower Manhattan. Call to confirm availability and the transit schedule for Thanksgiving week-end.

Another alternative is to drive your dingy through the Lincoln Tunnel and park in the Port Authority Garage right as you exit the tunnel. There are also plenty of other parking garages around the city and traffic should be relatively light on Thanksgiving Day. A great resource is the Icon Parking Web Site which lists locations for all their garages along with prices and coupons if available.

Pets May Get More Access to Maryland State Parks

The Maryland State Park Service is considering pet policy changes at parks across the state. According to the Maryland Department of Natural Resources, Maryland State Parks and other public lands managed by the State will be closed during service reduction days for the 2009 holiday season, as part of the State’s Furlough and Temporary Salary Reduction Plan. The stretch just north of Baltimore is especially bad. It’s best to travel through this very busy corridor after 10:00am and before 3:00pm if possible. Some of the work is being done at night so evening travel can be disrupted. Great timing to get out and check the changing forests. Peak season is almost over along most of the north east but further south into North Carolina, Georgia and Tennessee there is still a colorful show going on. For up to date information, The US Forrest Service monitors fall colors.
